Soft rock tapo labai populiarus 8-ajame deš. [[1977]] metais daug radijo stočių leido vien tik soft rock. Tuo pačiu metu, grupė [[Chicago]], buvusi [[jazz-rock]] grupė, irgi persivertė į soft rock ir pasiekė labai didelę komercinę sėkmę. Britų bliuzo grupė [[Fleetwood Mac]] taip susilaukė didelės sėkmės, kai ėmė groti šiuo stiliumi. Netgi [[Led Zeppelin]], kuri yra šiaip [[hard rock]] grupė, sukūrė keletą šio žanro dainų (pvz.: „All My Love“). [[1980]]m. skoniai jau keitėsi ir radijo sotys atspindėjo šitą pasikeitimą. Žanras evoliucionavo į „suaugusiųjų amžininką“, tai yra pop kategoriją, kuris darė mažesnę roko įtaką nei jo pirmtakas.
