Amenchotepas I buvo trečias [[Amosis|Amosio]] ir Amosė-Nefertari sūnus. Abu vyresni broliai mirė, todėl tapo faraonu [[1525 m. pr. m. e.]] Įsibrovėliai iš [[Libija|Libijos]] pasinaudodami Amosio mirtimi surengė antpuolį į [[Nilo Delta|Nilo Deltą]]. Nors ir būdamas nepatyręs Amenchotepas nugalėjo įsibrovėlius.

Pagal [[Maneto]] Amenchotepas Egiptą valdė 20 metų ir 9 mėnesius. Šį datavimą patvirtina įrašai Amenemheto (magiško vardo) kapavietėje, kur nurodo, kad jis valdė 21 metus. Yra dvi galimos Amenchotepo I kapavietės. Pirmoji yra KV39 [[Karalių slėnis|Karalių slėnije]], kita ANB, esanti Dra Abu el-Nagoje. Kūnas rastas Deir el-Bahri Kaše virš [[Hašepsuta|Hatšepsutos]] laidojimo šventyklos, dabartiniu metu yra eksponuojamas [[kairas|Kairo]] muziejuje.
